Pickleball Etiquette

Play hard, play fair, and make the court welcoming for everyone.

Pickleball is at its best when competition is matched with courtesy. This etiquette sheet is a reminder that every point, call, and conversation should reflect good sportsmanship, respect for others, patience with partners, and integrity in decision-making.

1. Show Good Sportsmanship

• Greet your opponents and partner before play, and finish each game with a paddle tap, handshake, or positive acknowledgement.
• Win with humility and lose with grace. A good attitude matters more than the score.
• Encourage fair, enjoyable play rather than trying to win at another player’s expense.
• Avoid blaming, mocking, arguing, swearing, or celebrating in a way that embarrasses others.

2. Be Patient and Supportive with Your Partner

• Your partner will make mistakes — so will you. Respond with encouragement, not criticism.
• Use supportive phrases such as “Good idea,” “Next point,” “We’ve got this,” or “No worries.”
• Do not roll your eyes, sigh, lecture, or offer unwanted coaching during the game.
• If feedback is welcome, keep it brief, kind, and focused on the next rally rather than the last error.
• Remember: a tolerant partner helps everyone play better and enjoy the game more.

3. Make Calls with Integrity

• Only call a ball “out” when you clearly see it out. If you are unsure, the ball is in.
• Give opponents the benefit of the doubt on close calls.
• Call faults on yourself or your team, even if no one else noticed.
• Correct your own mistaken call promptly and accept honest corrections graciously.
• Respect that opponents normally make calls on their side of the court; question calls politely, and do not argue.

4. Practice Good Court Manners

• Call the score clearly before serving so everyone is ready and informed.
• Wait your turn during open play and follow the local rotation system fairly.
• If a ball enters another court, call “Ball out” clearly. Play on any affected courts should stop immediately, and the ball should then be returned to the correct court before play resumes.
• Do not walk behind or across an active court during a rally; wait for a break in play.
• Keep the pace friendly and organised so everyone gets a fair chance to play.

5. Keep the Spirit of the Game

“Play every point with honesty, treat every player with respect, and help make the next game better than the last.”
